ISRO Announces FREE Online Certificate Course on “LIDAR Remote Sensing, data
processing and applications” in collaboration with the Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) for Professionals willing to use Lidar data for various applications, students and researchers of civil engineering, surveying, Geography, Architecture, geoinformatics, Geomatics etc.
About ISRO
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO ) is the national space agency of India. Under the Prime Minister of India, it operates as the primary research and development arm of the Department of Space (DoS).
ISRO is mainly responsible for operating tasks related to space only such as space exploration, international space cooperation, and the development of related technologies. ISRO is one of the six government space agencies in the world that has full launch capabilities, can use cryogenic engines, can launch extraterrestrial missions, and operate a large number of artificial satellites.
Earlier ISRO was known as the Indian National Committee for Space Research (INCOSPAR), founded by Jawaharlal Nehru on the advice of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai in 1962 for space research. Later INCOSPAR developed into ISRO in 1969, under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE). The government of India created a Space Commission and the DoS, bringing ISRO under it in 1972. The establishment of ISRO thus ignited space research activities in India. It has since been controlled by DoS, which is also responsible in the domain of astronomy and space technology for various other institutions in India.

About IIRS
Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) under the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Department of Space, Govt. of India is a prestigious Training and Educational Institute set up for developing trained professionals in the field of Remote Sensing, Geoinformatics and GNSS Technology for Natural Resources, Environmental and Disaster Management.
Formerly known as the Indian Photo-interpretation Institute (IPI), founded in 1966, the Institute boasts to be the first of its kind in entire South-East Asia.
While nurturing its primary endeavour to build capacity among the user community by training mid-career professionals, the Institute has enhanced its capability and evolved many training and education programs that are tuned to meet the requirements of various target groups, ranging from fresh graduates to policymakers including academia.
IIRS also conducts an e-learning program on Remote Sensing and Geoinformation Science

About the ISRO Announces FREE Online Certificate Course
Currently ISRO announces Free Online Certificate Course on LIDAR Remote Sensing, data
processing and applications
LiDAR is short for Light Detection and Ranging. It provides very accurate and high-resolution 3D data. When shooting with special sensors, the result is a three-dimensional series of dots. LiDAR is ideal when very precise measurements are required and is very cost-effective for the amount of data produced. Airborne LiDAR is becoming increasingly popular as a source of terrain mapping due to its high detail. Ground-based LiDAR started to become more common as off-the-shelf data became more common. Spaceborne LIDAR satellites provide unique information on various parameters of the atmosphere around the world. LiDAR data is stored in two forms, namely discrete return form and full waveform data. Data collected by LiDAR sensors must be processed and analyzed before they can be used for other purposes.
This course introduces the principles of LiDAR, LiDAR sensors and platforms, LiDAR data visualization, processing and analysis, and LiDAR applications. Participants will acquire the basic LiDAR skills needed to use commercial LiDAR sources and data products in a wide variety of applications, including topographic mapping, vegetation characterization and 3D modelling—urban infrastructure. The course takes place from 5-16 August 2024.
Target Participants
The course is intended for professionals who want to use Lidar data in various applications, students and researchers in civil engineering, Geography, Architecture, geoinformatics,
Geomatics etc.
