About IIRS

Indian Institute of Remote Sensing (IIRS) under the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Department of Space, Govt. of India is a prestigious Training and Educational Institute set up for developing trained professionals in the field of Remote Sensing, Geoinformatics and GNSS Technology for Natural Resources, Environmental and Disaster Management.

Formerly known as the Indian Photo-interpretation Institute (IPI), founded in 1966, the Institute boasts to be the first of its kind in entire South-East Asia.

While nurturing its primary endeavour to build capacity among the user community by training mid-career professionals, the Institute has enhanced its capability and evolved many training and education programs that are tuned to meet the requirements of various target groups, ranging from fresh graduates to policymakers including academia.

IIRS also conducts an e-learning program on Remote Sensing and Geoinformation Science

About the ISRO Announces FREE 1-Day Workshop

Currently, ISRO announces FREE 1-Day workshop on “Understanding Cryospheric
Hazards” is scheduled on 6th Sept 2024.

Studies of the Himalayan cryosphere have gained global importance due to the impact of climate change on Himalayan glaciers and snow cover compared to its consequences on all major river basins of the Himalayas, affecting almost 1.5 billion people.

Emerging issues include the impact of melting glaciers and snow that lead to the formation of many new lakes, some of which are at serious risk due to potential Glacial Lake Outburst Floods (GLOF). A relatively new phenomenon has appeared, namely the melting of permafrost and the dangers associated with it.

Due to changing precipitation patterns, including extreme precipitation, many avalanche zones and avalanche channels have experienced massive debris slides. The workshop aims to address high mountain hazards with a focus on the cryospheric hazards of the Himalayas.

Expected Outcome of ISRO Announces FREE 1-Day Workshop

This one-day workshop is expected to improve the understanding of the emerging problems of the Himalayan cryosphere in a comprehensive way, mainly related to glacier hazards, glacier dynamics, glacial lake dynamics, permafrost, landform dynamics, snow cover dynamics and debris flow. This helps researchers and former students to add new dimensions and understanding to higher and professional education.
